For the fifth year in a row the California population of the Light-footed Ridgway’s Rail exceeded 500 breeding pairs and for the second time in 40 years exceeded 600 pairs. A total of 656 pairs exhibited breeding behavior in 18 marshes in 2016. The Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge is a 1,051 acre wetland where the Tijuana River enters the Pacific Ocean. It is also part of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is the only coastal lagoon in California which does not have any roads or rail lines built across it.
